Halal Bread and Swine Flu

The following article appears to imply that we are eating bread made of pig.
Apparently, something we all take for granted as a basic necessity in our staple diet appears to be made from additives which possibly includes enzymes from the pancreas of pigs.

Clearly this is a matter for the Halal authorities and scholars to confirm however, if these reports are true I find it scandalous that Muslims have been sold a product under false pretences that violates the basic and fundamental tenets of our faith.

Once again this needs to be confirmed but in view of the current pandemic surrounding Swine flu surely this should be done urgently in order to provide the Muslim and Jewish community with an appropriate level of reassurance that we are not eating the flesh of swine.

  1. Sir,
Whilst I agree that you should have concerns egarding any additives in bread that would offend the dietary principles of both your religion and that of the Jewish faith, I am at a loss to understand the correlation between that and "Swine 'Flu". The term 'Swine 'Flu" should be no more offensive than that of "Asian Flu" or "Bird Flu" regardless of religious beliefs.
It is nature that the lazy way to describe these things is to attach an easy name to an ever changing virus. It is ifluenza - the fact that it is prevalent in pigs as well as humans is of no more importance than bird flu being in birds and humans, and is not a problem for your religion because of the connection. It is an ever changing virus that we humans are susceptible to - that's it.
But to connect it to the potential bread problem is absurd. As regards the bread additives, who - if any of us - knows what factories put into these products ..... that is why I bake our bread or purchase from a small bakery - no additives, no problems. It is not just a religious problem but a problem of just what these companies put in our mouths. On the non-muslim side, you do not point out that at least 80% of the lamb from New Zealand and supplied to major outlets is halal - this may be offensive to people who do not wish their meat to be produced in such a manner. Again, it is a major supplier doing the best for it's market, not it's customers. We are all being led by the nose when we purchase from these outlets. We are not given the information we need.
You do yourself an injustice, sir, being provocative for the sake of it does not make for reasoned argument.

  2. I am a muslim David, and yes I agree, this is not a muslim problem! it is a human problem.
We as a humanity, have no idea what these companies put in our mouths.
As for us muslims, we really do ourselves an injustice when we do not include the human race. After All shaytan is not just an enemy to only us (the muslims), he is the enemy of banu Adam. The whole of humanity. Islam is about peace not about segregation or high moral principles!

  3. Islam is about everything else than peace.

The quran preaches peace only when all the people in the world are muslims.

And for the fun of argument: Let's say all the people in the world became muslims. It would be very interesting to see how sunni and shia muslims also could have peace.

    PEACE

  4. To anon: Islam tells us clearly: "do not divide yourself into sects" - and now, inhallah, everyone can see why it tells us that - look at the problems.

Furthermore, the Quran critises the Jews & Christians for taking their rabbis and their monks as leaders, and in doing so "worshipped them".

And here we are, loud and clear about where everyone else in the world has gone wrong, where we, ourselves and us stand under dschoalrs, mahtabs, sects and all other manner of prohibited things.

and that leads me to the word "hypocrite" - and I shall stop there, lest I incite my own brothers to hatred: another forbidden act in Islam.

    What...a...mess.
How can we expect people to understand us when everything we say and do is in disagreement with its own self?
