The Guardian have a scoop that EastEnders will feature a storyline about a Muslim embarking on a Gay affair.
I'm all for challenging taboos etc however, what strikes me about this story is do the BBC think this a true reflection of the wider Muslim community in East London. I don't.
Delicate & sensitive issues aside what about Islamaphobia, the stigma Muslim women face in society wearing the Hijab and the levels of racism that all Muslim's are suffering. Is this not worthy of coverage by the main soap in the country? I do hope the storyline also covers these areas.....
Moreover, haven't we moved on from the days when white people "blacked up" on the Black & White Minstrel show. Why does a non Muslim have to play a Muslim? Are there no suitable Muslim actors?

I am gay, I was bought up in East London, and I am from a Muslim community. There are lots of people like me. Yes, it is a true reflection of the "wider" Muslim community. Although there are many other issues such as Islamophobia that need to be tackled, this is the first time that I can think of that this issue has been addressed on mainstream TV.
ReplyDeleteTo anon; yes, but homophobia is not an islamic issue - its a world issue. To assume that homophobia is restricted to the Muslim community and brand it as such is simply using Islam as the scapegoat for all of the world's gay-haters.
ReplyDeleteIf any writer sincerely wishes to do a favour fo the plight of the Islamic community in London, then really they should try to examine the conflicts of our youth, and how the youth are supposed to reconicle the actions of the 7th century Muslims to the actions of today - and where they can place themselves.
The biggest problem for our youth is that no matter what they do Islamically - they find themselves hated by Muslims and non-Muslims alike
How about that Eastenders? We know hommosexuals have problems: they have problems in every community - including aethiest ones.
