What is going on?

First the Foreign Affairs Committee correctly says Hamas should be engaged.

Then the US and UK say we should be talking to the Taliban.

Yes, but why does it take thousands of dead Afghans and almost two hundred dead British soldiers before we also reach this correct conclusion?
