A Muslim girl claims she is "emotionally traumatised" because she has been banned from enrolling at a college apparently due to her refusal to take the veil off for Fraud identity purposes.
Assuming what has been reported is accurate, frankly in my opinion some Muslims are really beginning to take the piss out of the freedoms we ironically enjoy in this country which would never be provided in large parts of the so called Islamic world.
When Sister Shawana Bilqes claims Islam forbids her from taking off her veil I say bollocks. Where in Islam, the Quran or Sunnah does it say Muslim women should dress like Ninjas. Yes wearing the Hijab, simplicity, modesty, avoiding aggressively showing ones beauty are all within the tenets of Islam but this fad, that tends to stem from the backward up north brigade, who claim the veil is compulsory is bullshit.
While London Muslim does not support the rather extreme approach of Egyptian scholars who seem to get off forcing Muslim girls to take the veil off, what I do ask for, from some of our sisters is to use some bloody common sense particularly if a female has asked to see your face. "Traumatised", tell you what sister go and spend some time in Saudi or perhaps with the Taliban and then see what emotional state you are left in. The way some of our sisters carry on you would think they are being asked to take their bras off.
She's young and will learn with time. She's doing the best she can according to what she knows, mashaalallah. You however are behaving like a bit of a jerk. I'm sorry but its true. And unlike her, you deserve and need to hear it.

I invigilate finals exams at a London university and there, when we have to check the ID of a girl wearing a niqab, a female invigilator goes off to another room, the ladies, or somewhere else nearby and appropriate with the student and checks her face against her ID card. No big deal.
ReplyDeleteAll the girls I've checked in this way seemed very nice and polite and not at all extreme. After 2 or 3 times you get to recognise them anyway, even with the niqab on (although, of course, you still have to go through the motions of checking).
In principle, if a girl chooses to wear a niqab in her ID photo too, a member of the academic staff has to come and vouch that they know her, but in practice (perhaps rather oddly!) this has never happened in any exam I've been in yet.
I don't know why this college is making such a fuss. It's not difficult. We just get on with it.
Some of them even wear gloves while writing. So what? It's their choice.
What bothered me a lot more on another occasion was that a girl ("only" in a hijab) kept coughing madly through the entire exam because it was Ramadan and so "she could not have a drink of water or any cough medicine".
She wouldn't accept that maybe the Prophet (PBUH) might think common sense and respect for the other students might be more important. I lived next to a very devout Muslim family so I know perfectly well that if you're ill, a sensible Imam will tell you to fast at another time of year, not now, so this wretched coughing girl was quite wrong to disturb all the other students in this unnecessary way.
But what can you do on the spot when faced by people who have wacko interpretations of whichever faith they adhere to? (Especially if you're not from the same faith?)
Why on Earth should the exam organiser have to go to the trouble (and expense) of having to check people who deliberately conceal their face?
ReplyDeletelisten if you think Muslims are taking the piss then why did you use the word "Freedom" coz if i'm corect that means having the riht to do what you want and talking about dress code meaning you wear what your comfortable in so whata your problem..do we (Muslims say why do white peiple exose their body so much i see white girls walking in bra and nickers on streets obv they have no selfrespect white people get drunk and do next shit but we don'y say anything so we do you have a problem with what and how we dress seriously people need to stop acting stupid and mind theier own buisness..coz we got a lot to say but we are not ignorent and arogent like other people to be critisising them,you people belive in Jesus pbuh but have no respect you wear croses on your body but don't know what it means and what it restricts you off you only wear it for fashion..Muslims can do a LOT LIKE I SAID BUT ALLOW YOU PEOPLE MAN MOOVE
