London Muslim has also noted this increasing awareness and willingness to learn more about Islam while rejecting the ecclesiastical Evangelical Christianity by Black Britons who don't think these happy clappers necessarily have the spiritual answers to today's moral and emotional challenges.
As a result I highly recommend the book and am off to get my copy for a weekend read.
Black Muslims in Britain: Why are a growing Number of Young Black people are Converting to Islam? is published by Lion Hudson

Ooh, lots of interesting side-questions to that one.
ReplyDeleteWhy are they not content in the first place (are they not satisfied with Christianity or does it have more to do with their wider society)? What does Islam offer to them that is so attractive?
What proportion of them might be turning to a fundamental form of Islam compared to those born into Islam? Is that impression created purely by the media or is there some truth in it?
Does this happen more with young black men or young black women?
Not related directly to black people or to Islam, but this quote:
"Equally, many of the women interviewed suggested that the Islamic focus on modesty had liberated them from the rampant fashion-related consumerism that objectifies all women, and sexualises pre-pubescent girls."
made me think of Affluenza by Oliver James. Recommended reading.
