As you may know what is Halal and Haram is an area of particular interest to London Muslim. While I'm no scholar what seems to be occurring is a growing divide amongst scholars about the permissibility of Alcohol and Pig. Lucozade contains both Alcohol and Pig Gelatine but has been approved for consumption as Halal because in the mind of some scholars the minuscule amount implies insignificance and therefore acceptability.
I'm not convinced and bearing in mind who makes Lucozade ie Glaxosmithkline somehow the cynic in me cant help thinking there is a lot of money to be made for certain scholars if they take, shall we say diplomatically a flexible approach to a multinational companies desire for a Halal certificate.

Alcohol is a naturally occurring substance. You can find it in almost every natural fruit. But does that make the fruit haram? No, of course not.
ReplyDeleteI can't find the hadith right now, but one of the greatest generals of Muhammad pbuh's time in later life took a bath with alcohol - as it was medicinal. Some sahabah found out and complained to the then khalif. The general was summoned and asked to explain himself. He explained the meaning of the verse in the quran about prohibiton of alcohol. He also scolded the khalif for going to an extreme. His view point was accepted.
The reason we do not drink alcohol is clear. It is haram and disallowed by God. Alcohol for this purpose is a substance which in consumption we will experience the effects of and eventually, get drunk.
Lucozade, as long as they did not go out of their way to add alcohol to it for the sake of it AND it didn't contain pig, I as a Muslim would have no problem in drinking it - in theory. In practice, it's a nasty drink so I stay away from it. Diabetes in a bottle in my opinion.
Pork on the other hand is a totally different story. To get pork in your food, you would have to go out of your way to kill the pig and mix it in your food. This of course, would not have happened in the prophets time.
Let's put it this way. To get 'human faeces' or more commonly known as 'shit' in your food, would you go out of your way to put some food that you are mass producing? What about even half a gram in 1000 curries (that's 0.0005g of shit per curry). Would you eat it? So why would you eat the pork (no matter how little) someone has clearly gone out of their way of putting your food?
Ask your self, couldn't they use another animal?
When you find it, can you please give more info on the generals story there? names, sources etc? I am interested in reading up about it.
ReplyDeleteI'll start looking for it now.
ReplyDeleteFound it.

It IS wikipedia, so take it with a pinch of salt. Check out some of your trusted sources for the same narration. Please check the section about this great man's dismissal from the army.
Peace to you.
Thanks.

ReplyDeletealcohol is not consumable nor is gelatine or any mix with it is haram for muslims
ReplyDeleteGet a grip people, we don't need Lucozade or Ribena to survive (Alcohol and Pig Gelatine are you mad!)Giving it up isn't going to kill you! Do yourself a favour, drink water the stuff all other living things seem to survivie on! If in doubt, just stop doing it!
