The Standard have an interesting interview with Waheed Alli that provides a revealing insight into the mind of one of the few if only outstanding Muslim billionaire businessmen in the UK. Ali who is gay proves in my opinion to be a rather complex and peculiar character who disappoints with his priorities.
Notwithstanding the amazing success he has had in virtually everything he has done bar failing to become the Chair of Channel 4, Ali a New Labour product and friend of Blair who ennobled him seems to have conspicuously managed to avoid doing anything for the wider Muslim community with all the money, power and influence he had during the Labour Government. Moreover as he makes clear in the interview the only time he pops in to the House of Lords is to take part in "gay and equality matters".
London Muslim is disappointed with Ali because if you examine successful businessmen in the Jewish community like Lord Levy or Benjamin Perl they admirably fight and campaign for their community interests be it on Israel or Jewish State schools respectively. While we have Gulam "pull the drawbridge up" Noon or Anwar Pervaiz the difference about Ali is that he is a real political animal with not only access to the top in Labour but a genuine understanding of the political and broadcasting establishment and yet I cannot name one tangible thing he has done for the betterment of all UK Muslims.
London Muslim with a left of center political agenda but dont let that put you off.
I write about issues the mainstream Murdoch agenda ignores and more than happy to also take on the tiny minority of vociferous fruitcakes in my own community.
In addition I'm a long suffering supporter of QPR. So, a Muslim with a sense of humour
