Following the construction of the
world's largest clock in Mecca which dwarfs London's Big Ben there is a growing hope that Mecca Time will replace GMT as the new universal time standard.
GMT was imposed by the west in 1884 when in reality Mecca is the global meridian as it is the true centre of the world. Naturally there will be the usual
white male outcry about another chipping away at the West's history particularly as the tourist industry over at Greenwich may take a hit. The Muslim response should be to press ahead with plans for Mecca Time and revert to the
glorious days of Muslim civilisation when Muslim scientist Al Jazri built the first clock.
Why isn't it like a minorette? Why build it to look like Big Ben, an infidels building? Fucking hell those Saudis have no taste!
ReplyDeleteAh a question, how much has Saudi Arabia donated to their brothers/sisters flooding disaster relief in Pakistan, any ideas?
ReplyDeleteAlhamdullilah I have been hajj and to the glorious city of Mecca. When i was young, i used to brag about how Mecca is different from the commercialised atmosphere of the Vatican. Our holy city was minimalist, stripped of vanity or western commercialism and opulence. How things change!
ReplyDeleteI find this building and this clock obscene. And nothing about it smacks of Islam!
Laughable arab/muslim supremacism, Brits created the standard time system, and muslims create nothing but their idiotic fantasies. You lot really should ease up on the first cousin marriages it's lowered your collective IQ's to below see level. Seriously, it's looking more and more like muslims in the UK are going to end in internment/psychological rehabilitation camps, then transportation to the islamic shithole of their choice, or just dead.
ReplyDelete"GMT was imposed by the west".
ReplyDeleteImposed?
Have you truly lost the plot on what matters here?
It is a system for organising the time in a pragmatic, workable way. It was agreed upon at a discussion table - not imposed in the same sense that say, Sharia law is 'imposed', or niqabs are 'imposed' by one dominant group on the others.
Your resentful sense of imposition ignores the fact that in 1884 the Arabs were herding camels in the desert while the rest of the world was industrialising and developing its science and technology.
Another interesting point - when it is is 12 noon in London it is actually and precisely something like 14 hours 53 minutes and 18 seconds in Mecca - not the standardised 15.00.
So do you propose that in the future, when a plane lands in New York the announcer will now say "Welcome to New York where the local time is now 4 hours 55 minutes and 6 seconds ahead of London"?
Because unless we do this, all that will really happen is the Saudis will succeed in changing one letter in the acronym from GMT to MMT.
And what is the point of that? Where's the benefit for the world in reorganising global time systems, websites, airline reservation systems, books, materials and conventions? To make you feel better?
In fact it seems trivial, petty and foolish - and so do you for backing the idea in the first place.
Seriously - with all that is going on these days, inside the news agenda and outside it, you really should pick your fights more carefully.
1. I can't see the point of making the worlds tallest clock tower with the worlds largest clock,
ReplyDeleteif it's going to constantly run 3 hours slow. Dam waste of money!
2. Mecca = Centre of the Earth?
Only if the Earth is a flat circular disc. Perhaps held up by 4 giant elephants standing on the back of an even more giant turtle.
3. GMT was imposed on the World by the British Empire by force?
So wrong. GMT was devised to be used by the British Admiralty, i.e. Navy. Longitudanal calculations and such. It was adopted by the rest of the world because it was a practical solution to a common problem.
4. If Mecca time is adopted, where will the international date line fall?
Have they thought about that. With GMT the IDL is in the middle of the pacific ocean. Convenient.
If the change to Mecca time, the IDL may not be so convenient.
agree.. Saudis are ambitious to change time.. duh what the hell are they thinking? Fools!
