LM previously highlighted the peculiar case of Afshan Azad the Muslim actress who starred in the Harry Potter Series as Padma Patil.
One of the reasons I called the case complex and worthy of a JK Rowland book in its own right was due to charges being levelled by Afshan against her family who she said were trying to kill her then promptly withdrawn.
Apparently with regard to the charges of conspiracy to kill the father and brother have been found not guilty although the brother pleaded guilty to assault.
LM believes this case reveals something something altogether more hypocritical about Muslim men. While the brother in this case was happy to call Afshan a "prostitute" and attack her for having a boyfriend how many Muslim brothers also have girlfriends. While Muslim men are out and about shagging around they simply cannot tolerate their sisters doing the same which prompts all manner of accusations about girls being slappers well it takes two to tango, who are the girls sleeping with.
In addition, what this case illustrates is the taboo subject of a Muslim girl with a Hindu boyfriend. For Muslims from the sub-continent a female member of the family bringing home or going out with either a Hindu or in particular a Sikh lies utter shame and humiliation and I wonder if that is what this case is really all about.
Interesting, I hadn't heard about this case at all over here in Canada. I'd be interested to hear more of your analysis.

ReplyDeleteI appreciate not all Muslims are the same. I too am a Muslim. I have Muslim friends who are not like the brother of Afshan. They, like myself have common sense and use their brains in (what I believe to be) the right way. However, the ones who behave this way, i.e. go out one minute looking to get laid and then beat up their sisters the next when they see somebody, paint a very bad picture for Muslims. It's the 21st Century and we're not living in Pakistan! Also, I really don't like the way (some/most of us) treat our women as unequal. My cousin married a Hindu girl (she is very good to him and him to her), he has never asked her to convert and equally she has never asked him. This is how it should be and for those out there who are still set in their Eastern minded ways I suggest, if that is how you wish to live, go back home and say As-Salamu Alaykum to the family from me - Saeed.
Yeye muslims are good. Only muslims can kill their sisters for having a boyfriend. More muslims in Europe plz!!!
