LM believes the current and increasingly hostile treatment by Malaysia's authorities towards its Shia minority is unacceptable and discriminatory.
Predictably the immediate sectarian reaction will revolve around suspicious accusations that LM is a Shia which I'm not.
This is an issue about a prosperous respectable and decent majority Muslim country being urged to treat all its minorities fairly. Sadly the Shia, because they split the faith have faced enormous hostility from the majority Sunni however, the irony is that in Malaysia they are now treated worse than non Muslims ie Hindus, Christians and Buddhists.

There is no Shia minority because there are no Malaysian Shias. All the Shia in this country are foreigners - from Iran, Iraq, Pakistan and Indonesia.
ReplyDeleteI'm a Malaysian Muslim (Sunni) in east Malaysia, and so far I have never encountered a Malaysia or Foreign Shia. so the news you heard about us discriminating is kinda...false. and new.
ReplyDeleteMalaysia should stop discriminating against its non-muslim/Malay citizens such as the Malaysian Chinese and Malaysian Indians full stop.
ReplyDeleteSorry, Abdullah and Mahira, I think you haven't really read the papers. All mainstream Malay newspapers made the story as front page story on the day after the raid in Gombak. The majority were Malay locals. Even one of the 2 who were thought to be the 'leaders' is a Malay. Furthermore, just because you haven't met one does not mean that they do not exist. How can they declare their faith when they could be possibly arrested? Please read: http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2010/12/18/nation/7644848&sec=nation and watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NggfzkAgOIU . I pity them, their only plea is "If Buddhists, Christians and Hindus are allowed in Malaysia, why not Shia Muslims?".
ReplyDeletejust because I have never met one doesnt mean I will treat them the way others treat them. Sorry Anonymous, you don't know everything about everyone.
ReplyDeleteThe news has been on the national TV over and over and TV3 (most popular public channel in Malaysia) even broadcast a report denouncing Shias as those opposing Sunnis!
ReplyDeleteWahhabism has already taken over Malaysia, and many people cannot differentiate between it and mainstream Islam.
Meanwhile, the government does not tolerate any changes in the quality and quantity of the majority population (Malays), because the political atmosphere there is very competitive having Chinese and Indians with their demands of equal rights.
protecting our rights, that's what we should do. and Malays are not discriminating against Chinese or Indians or any races in Malaysia. Malays are being oppressed nowadays, in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteWe chinese and indians are treated as shia as they say if one of the sunni kills a shia, they will get a "point" as they can go to "heaven" earlier.Malaysian muslims majority are sunni,so in order to get more "points",they will start treating us(chinese and indians) as shia. What the heck are all these things.really really disappointed.
