Should Malaysia's Muslims be allowed to work in Pubs?

There has been an outcry in reaction after a decision to ban Muslims in Malaysia from working in venues which serve Alcohol with supporters of the ban citing various hadith as evidence that it is unlawful for Muslims to sell liquor.

Following the response, the ban has been reversed however, it got me thinking all those Muslim brothers and Sisters working as cashiers at supermarkets are they behaving in a haram manner when for example at the counter checkout they sell Alcohol or non halal meat.

LM is no scholar but I'm genuinely interested in views.

  1. This issue has been bothering us here as well. I work in a bookshop just beside a hispanic-themed restaurant/karaoke pub. and through our (the workers) curiosity we asked whom the workers are and was surprised to find that majority of them are muslim. What even taken us aback was the fact that they did not bother to argue about serving alcoholic drink. so the real problem lies in the employees themselves. I know that there are tolerant non muslim employers whom manage to cover the alcohol-serving to the non muslim workers but when the problem lies in the muslim workers itself, its just difficult to settle because of their lack of understanding or care towards their roles as muslim workers. like I said before, any non halal food should be served by non muslims and otherwise for the muslims. It will prevent any wrong doings based on Islamic law and both muslim and non muslim will eat/drink in a more proper manner. so therefore its suitable to hire both non muslim and muslims to give the 'balance'. just a few words from a muslim blogger in MY. any probs/quest. please feel free to correct/ask me.

  2. Why not just hire people who can do the whole job?
