Ed Miliband has called for a "new start" with the Muslim community in an interesting interview about how he plans to improve the damaged relationship after B£iar.
LM has already highlighted Ed's speech at conference where he attacked Israel and LM senses he is no instinctive Israelite. Those in the know who are close to him stress the influence of his mother who is a discreet member of Jews for Justice in Palestine.
While the interview is short of specifics, LM urges Ed to continue his dialogue with all Muslim groups including the MCB and Engage about how to restore the relationship with a community who traditionally supported Labour. However, it goes without saying, trust has been damaged significantly by New Lab's wars in Muslim lands and the appalling record on civil liberties that ironically the Tories have now improved.
Politics is often about timing and Ed needs to be careful that when the opportunity presents itself he needs to position himself and Labour on the right side of the argument. Sadly he was silent and left Sadiq Khan out on a limb when Sadiq correctly attacked Cameron's appalling Munich speech.
While Ed is making the correct moves by tentatively sounding out the community the true test of course is not what is said in opposition but how you act in Govt. The Muslim community needs to see more tangible evidence rather than words that the Labour Party are genuinely interested in a new start.
