Jameela Jamil is not a Muslim

LM increasingly and rather hilariously seems to find myself in the position of clarifying which celebrities like Paris Hilton are not Muslims.

The latest celebrity who is being speculated about is T4's Jameela Jamil, perhaps understandably because her Bangladeshi name has been labelled as Muslim.

However, Jameela recently tweeted she is not a Muslim and was not brought up in any faith.

  1. well done LM, you are learning the value of doing research. Now please do this for all those women you regularly write about, i.e. get some concrete proof that Mezghan Husseiny IS in fact a muslim before you go on to criticize her dress for not adhering to muslim dress codes. Otherwise DO NOT write about her on your blog. This sort of thing gets very tiring after a while.

  2. Jameela Jamil is a name which originates from the East...it is not a Bangladeshi name as such, and cannot be labelled as being from any particular Eastern Country. Any more than she can be labelled Muslim, Christian, Jewish, or Hindu!

And whilst Jameela may not have been brought up in any Faith, she has a deep understanding of Spirituality and lives by her own Moral Codes such as an unflinching belief in Truth, Goodness, Decency, and Charity...the cornerstones of ALL Religions, SURELY?

  3. sometimes I read your posts and find them just to be as trashy and gossipy as the Sun. "lalala is not Muslim!"... come on now, what is this? Whether someone is a Muslim, how someone dresses whether Muslim or not is not for you or anyone to judge. Let people be, everyone will be accountable for their own actions at the end of time.. stop being such a gossip. You're so quick to judge other Muslims yet you constantly back bite and say quite not nice stuff about people in a lot of your posts. It's actually haram to backbite in Islam so concentrate on bettering yourself as a Muslim and stop being a hypocrite.

  4. you guys need to calm down. these are just responses to people who believe these women are muslim. the thing is, non-practicing muslims often drag practicing muslims down with them which is really annoying.

i just recently wrote about noureen dewulf:

These maybe/are the fruits of religion. However the roots/cornerstone of Islam is the search for the truth, that is why we believe in the kalima.

All is mere well-meaning conjecture. It is like having a Samsung instruction booklet for a Nokia mobile phone.

    1. I totally agree with you :D
Am an arab and jameela jamil is a defenet common arab name

    2. Not all Arabs are Muslim though are they?? Her name is common in Bangladesh and even used by Hindus who live there. Names really don't tell you much. Someone who is called Paul, Michael or Matthew are not all Christians. Many of them are nothing!

    3. Not all Arabs are Muslims, true. But Jamil is definitely a Muslim name, especially for one of Indian descent (as opposed to one of African descent who only adopted African-Muslim-sounding names to emancipate themselves from Western norms). Be it in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Egypt, Dubai, London, Paris, New York, Thailand, China - Jamil is definitely a Muslim name. An exception could be in Indonesia, though, where they define themselves by race first before religion. Just clarifying, and agreeing that whatever faith Jameela Jamil adheres to or doesn't, her family is of Muslim origins. Kinda like that Zain guy from One Dimension, right?

  7. So you are saying ONLY THE SEARCH FOR THE TRUTH is the cornerstone of Islam? What a narrow minded and incorrect view. Have you not heard of the importance of Charity? And Jameela happens to be the Ambassador for three Charities for which she works tirelessly. Surely THAT is God's work rather than putting a LABEL on which Religion she does or does not follow? Jameela may be originally an Arabic name, but why presume she does not believe in Islam? Has she ever said that? No, she has just said she was not brought up in any particlar Faith. By the way, it is neither witty nor clever to compare Religion with Mobile Phones. It is demeaning to all Religions.

  8. WHICH GENIUS QUOTED GEORGE ORWELL, AN ATHEIST AN NON-BELIEVER ON THE LONDON MUSLIM FORUM?

...and if they decided to put an Atheist's quote on a Religious Forum, why not put George Orwell's most famous one:

"He was an embittered atheist, the sort of atheist who does not so much disbelieve in God as personally dislike Him"

    GEORGE ORWELL

  11. She is a kafira and proud. So it is not about backbitting it is just a simple matter of seeing her as she sees herself. Anyway, it makes it much easier to know she is a Kafira when young desent muslims girls point to her as a reference we can say with confidence for them not to associate themselves with someone who behaves and carries herself like that.

  12. Oh dear guys you don't need to get so hyped up about it personally hearing her name i thought she came from a muslim-middle east background but if she's not it's not anyones bussiness her beliefs will be between her and god snm.

  13. If she isn't a muslim and says so, then thats great we dont need dead wood weighing us down. If she is a muslim then she's a sellout simple as and needs to buckle up. Trading this world for the next is a bad bad bad exchange.

  14. I don't see why this post descended into a 'is she/isn't she' Muslim debate, when she said it herself, SHE IS NOT MUSLIM. That's it, SHE IS NOT A MUSLIM. You commenters think you know her beliefs better then her? Idiots.

  15. I ALWAYS WONDERED IF SHE WAS MUSLIM COZ SHE DRESSES REAL SLEAZY .WHY THE FULL MUSLIM NAME THEN? WHAT ABOUT THAT SLAPPER IN SUGABABES/ SHE ALWAYS HAS LESS CLOTHES ON THAN THE OTHER 2.

  16. Why do you assume ethnicity or nationality such as arabic our bangladeshi automatically makes one muslim or ' of muslim origin'? by the same token are western converts kaffir? If you want to pass judgement on people then start with peoplewho actually call themselves muslim!

I AM IN DISBELIEF THAT ANYONE COULD BE SO IGNORANT AND GIVE ALL MUSLIMS A BAD NAME BY MAKING THE ABOVE COMMENT. JAMEELA JAMIL WAS BEDRIDDEN FOR OVER A YEAR AFTER A CAR ACCIDENT AT 17, AND TOLD SHE WOULD NOT WALK AGAIN. SHE IS AN EXAMPLE TO YOUNG WOMEN EVERYWHERE, MUSLIM OR NOT, FOR HER COURAGE AND DETERMINATION TO PROVE THE DOCTORS WRONG AFTER A LONG AND PAINFUL ROAD TO RECOVERY. YOU SHOULD BE CELEBRATING THE FACT THAT SHE IS ABLE TO WALK AGAIN, NOT CRITICISING HER FOR WEARING CLOTHES SHE IS NOW ABLE TO ENJOY, OR WOULD YOU PREFER THAT SHE HAD REMAINED BEDRIDDEN AND COVERED UP FOR THE REST OF HER YOUNG LIFE? JAMEELA JAMIL IS AN EXAMPLE OF "GRACE UNDER PRESSURE". YOU SHOULD ENCOURAGE YOUR DAUGHTERS TO BE MORE LIKE HER AND TO SHOW THE SAME FAITH AND BELIEF SHE DID WHEN LIFE DEALT HER A BLOW SHE ALMOST DID NOT RECOVER FROM. SHAME ON YOU FOR TRYING TO BRING SHAME ON HER.

    1. SORRY u r crazy, she is not an example to any woman, she is an individual living her life in the limelight the way she wants to and for her own worldly personal financial n emotional benefits, I would never want my daughter to be like her.

  19. She is my hero and I look upto her!!

At least she has the guts to dress the way she does without being worried about certain biggoted muslims suggesting and assuming that she's not a good person b'cos she doesn't dress with a hijab - she's not even a Muslim so why do you care the way she dresses, its you're own fears that seem to overtake any form of rationality i.e. worried about muslim pride maybe?! Embarrassing!!

And I'm a muslim, please remember there are different types of muslims and we all don't want to be quaran preaching/robotic/hijab wearing women, some of us want to be different and the only people that give muslim's a bad name are biggoted women like you!!

  20. I watch the Simpsons on T4 and she presents it sometimes. I always thought she was of mixed white and Afro-Caribbean background. The name Jamil does not necessarily mean t is Muslim. The name Jamal, for example, is quite a common name among African Amercans even among Christians.

  23. She is of Pakistani and Indian heritage. Both her parents are of Muslim background, but if she has actually gone on record as saying she is not a Muslim then she is not, pretty simple really. She was raised by her Mother, Shireen (also a Muslim name!) She speaks a bit about her family in this article http://fabulousmag.co.uk/2011/02/20/she-s-been-hailed-as-the-new-face-of-british-style-but-life-hasn-t-always-been-so-sweet-for-t4-presenter-jameela-jamil/

  26. To the Muslims who are spouting nothing but vitriol for Jameela please remember that you are Muslims and that speaking ill of someone, even Jameela, is against good manners. The Prophet (saw) never did this to those of our community who were hypocrites never mind those who were either misguided or ignorant of Islam and its etiquettes. As for those progressive Muslims (so called) who use opportunities such as these to attack conservative Muslims then I would suggest that you display the very liberal tolerance you boast. But, most of all this display of bad manners does Muslims a disservice.

First of all we should not burn our natural bridge we have with sister Jameela and in fact change the perspective. Whatever little she has of her Muslim identity we should try to say that we are happy we share that with her even her name. Thus leaving a bridge that should in the future she chooses to reach out to us then she will feel welcome to, as we would welcome anyone who wanted to reach out to us.

Do I think she is a perfect example of a Muslim woman, it's irrelevant what I think as her dress and personal conduct is nothing to do with any of us and how she behaves is also not our business. The simple fact is she doesn't feel in her heart that she should dress modestly then this is between her and her God. She is not accountable to the community as individuals or as a group. What is happening outside is a reflection of what is going on inside. So, how can we seek to impose taqwa (God consciousness)on her, it is an individual thing. It is better a person actually feels this for themselves rather than be shamed into such behaviour, it defeats and demeans the symbols of taqwa thus allowing others to labels them as the symbols of oppression rather than an expression of love and devotion to God. And, please do not demean sisters who wear the niqab or hijab. Do you honestly think our sisters are that mentally and spiritually vulnerable that they would see Jameela and simply rip off their symbols of taqwa? If so you haven't experienced taqwa or know practicing sister's because if you had you would know their iman is not based on television fads or presenters.

She may never inquire about Islam ever and that's fine too. But, do we want, as Muslims to be the cause of her permanently turning away from Islam. Are you sure you want that on your record on the day of judgement? If we are kind and loving to her and treat her better than others and be the kind of people who she can really feel welcome around and not judge her, because God knows she is Judged everywhere else in her industry, she may just be close enough for her to be able to reach out for a chat if she needs one,who knows where that may lead.

Jameela, Islam welcomes you and your Hindu partner any time.Islam is not Pakistani culture or Bangladeshi culture or any other culture or community. Islam is the relationship you have with your creator and a way to draw closer to your creator. There is no compulsion: do nothing or, as little or, as much as you can, there is no one to judge you in this world and it is no one's business to do so in this world. It is our business, as Muslims, to be there for you as help and support should you so require.

If you want to chat about anything but Islam especially s.williams@ebrahimcollege.org.uk . Have a taste of Islam that comes through those who are qualified and free of cultural ignorance and backwardness.

  27. As a Muslim, I agree with the above comment completely. It is only God who will judge you, so what makes other people think they have a right to say things such as "he/she is a kafir, or he/she will go to hell because..." Only God knows that. Before judging someone, take a good look at yourself and your own life first, if you are perfect (and no one is) then OK. My comment has nothing to do with Jameela, what she does and what she believes in is her business - Salim's comment put a smile on my face so I wanted to say something too.

My mother wears a hijab, but I don't and I have experienced so much judgement and ignorance from Muslims for that reason, calling me a bad Muslim etc. The relationship I have with God is entirely between us. I see so many practicing Muslims, but do drugs on the side. Now that is to me, very hypocritical since Islam teaches not to do such things and as easy as it would be to judge someone like that, how do I know that that person hasn't done something so beautiful that God forgave him? Well I don't know really do I?

Anyway I just think everyone should focus on bettering themselves before worrying about others.
