LM highlighted how Malaysia's authorities would be cracking down on unmarried Muslim couples playing cupid during Valentine's Day.
True to their word the authorities have nabbed a number of Muslim couples who under Sharia were flouting the rules of "khalwat" or close proximity when unmarried couples are prohibited from being alone in a private place.
I've already expressed my view about Valentine's Day being a western cultural marketing gimmick so anything Muslim countries do to consign this nonsense to the dustbin of history is fine with me.

Why do you always insist on taking a heteronormative view of things? Granted it is terrible that the Malaysian government is trying to stick its nose into the private affairs of other people, but you realise not all muslim couples are straight right?
ReplyDeleteThere are some fantastic muslim LGBT organisations both in the west and the developing world, and I would like to read more coverage about them.
Well a whole lot of Muslims leave Islamic countries and move to West for better life. I just read a survey of sexual harrasmenr in Egypt. Survey indictaed 75% of those who were sexually harrassed by Muslim brothers were Hijabis. In Afghanistan Muslim men have boy friends who dance and are kind of sexual slaves too. So Muslim celebrating valentine's day should not be a big deal.
