Malaysia to ban Valentine's day?

A number of northern Malaysian states in Kedah, Pennang and Kelantan are set to carry out "immorality checks" on Valentine's Day to reduce what Nasruddin Hassan Tantawi, head of the Islamic PAS Party's youth wing calls "immoral acts".

While some may consider this an overreaction, LM welcomes a predominately Muslim country taking a stand against western cultural values. For far to long marketing drivel here in the West has pushed gimmicks such as Valentine's Day and Halloween which strangely are adopted by Muslim countries. I've always been bemused why these marketing gimmicks are allowed seep into our culture. Why should, for example there be a "Mothers Day" when any Muslim can confirm that every day should be a Mothers Day because in Islam the Quran is clear, Paradise lies under the feet of your mother.

LM is no reactionary or spoil sport and in true libertarian spirit is opposed to the wholesale banning of everything however, occasionally we should have a debate about the true purpose of these western marketing gimmick days.
