Is Oman's Sultan Qaboos a "classy despot"

Brian Whitaker describes Oman's Sultan Qaboos as a "classy despot".

LM has already expressed my view about Qaboos being a corrupt western puppet here and here. However, I urge Omani's to understand the nature of the protests revealed by Fergus Nicoll's excellent and fair reporting for the BBC here and here.

When LM refers to corruption I highlight the corrupt nature of a system that allows an absolute ruler to rule by decree in the absence of any democratic political parties. In addition, when any ruler allows his military to Kill innocent Omanis peacefully protesting in Sohar for constitutional change that is cold blooded murder carried out by a tyrant.

Finally all can surely agree one thing, there is no denial that corruption is rampant in Oman because the system allows for it. Omanis, some of whom are fond of their Sultan despite his role in the Dhoffar uprising surely must accept that democracy and constitutional change is the only way to prevent further protests and killings.

  1. Oh dear Qaboos, are you really evil? :( Maybe during my stay in England I should buy myself some books which are banned in Oman.

  2. Sultan Qaboos has built a country out of nothing
He has done everything for his people
Enough one reads the wiki cable on his meeting with adm Fallon to understand how he cares
And in the west no one has ever cared about Oman
Many come to know today where is this country and go lecturing the world on tiranny without even knowing how is there
People in Oman are way better than we think
of course there are problems which is why protests are continuing but it is not the way the guardian put it
if someone has some agenda, then they should accomplish it without desrespecting others

    1. first of all im omani and visited and spoken to people in that bloody country where the people are afraid and poor. people are full of fear of reprisal of the inteligence and secret police . worst of all theya re afraid to lose their only jobs if they speak about this benevolent dictator hidden in the cloack of a monarchy . the goverment needs to change and the people need freedom of expression and the will to work as human biengs that are respected and not enslaved by qaboos and his clan and his henchman . he is like a mafia boss . anyone in 1970 could of done what qaboos has done because there was nothing in the country and look at qatar prior to shiekh hamad being in power it wasnt that prosperous and look it now in less than ten years where it sis and its citizens and look at oman and its citizens . at least people over there feel freedom and that they are alive not like oman and saudi and bahrain . all of those dictatotrs should leave there power or else their end would be like qadhafi and the rest . the next arab srping would be in the gcc .

  6. Never heard so much bull shit in my entire life this blog post is seriously pointless and has no credibility at all. Oman is a wonderful country I have lived there for 5 years and nothing of what I read here is true the Sultan is a ruler and a great one at that you just have to go to Oman and youll see that the people are educated happy, happy with there Sultan too for all that he has given to his people. A country as all countries have its issues but defiantly not the types of propaganda issues discussed here…move on and stop wasting time a spreading rubbish. If your going to do something then do it right otherwise shut it.

    1. yes you have lived there as a previleged expat earning more money than you would ever earn working in your own country and tax free . the people are nice and friedly but deep inside them they are full of resentment , and hatred towards the so called sultan and his henchmen his family and his ministers . qaboos has instilled fear on his people by using certain people as scape goats recently , he takes officialy for himself 10 % of the rveneue of oman daily to his pokets . what has he done to get that much money i havent seen him reach the moon . the omani people are afraid and sick and tired of being living in fear and stress and as well the unemployment it has reached epic levels . why did qaboos spend more than 300 milion rials on an opera house he should of employed the unemployed.

    2. as I read on newspapers, the employment office recently made a call for almost 500
      Few went for interview
      Now tell me about unemployment

    3. they get paid only 200 omani rials no wonder y they didnt go for an interview , where they only employ their contacts , and give out jobs even before they are advertised to the poor people without any contacts . oman since im living there has a very high inflation where everything is expensive whats 200 omani rials which is around 500 usd . which is not enough it might be sufficient for a place like india or any third world country not in oman where everyone takes ur money somehow or the other

  7. would the ministers or the head of state work for the minimum wage , if they can survive with 500 dollars a month , then anyone in that country can but i dont think so , that will be their wine bill with thier lunch not enough for a month. In oman they like to contrl everything even the ministers they are not willing to give a chance to blood
