Malaysia bans Christian lawyer from working in Sharia Court

LM is becoming perplexed and worried about why my favourite Muslim country Malaysia is turning increasingly hostile towards Christians.

Having highlighted the bizarre and ridiculous nonsense of a Govt ban finally being lifted over Christian Bibles using the word Allah, a Malaysian Court has now banned a Christian lawyer from appearing in a Sharia Court.

LM gets a large readership from Malaysia so I'd be grateful if my Malaysian Brothers and Sisters can genuinely help me out by explaining what merit there is banning any non Muslim lawyer from representing clients who also may be non Muslim but have a perfectly legitimate legal dispute.

  1. well i dont really much, but i think the gov prefers a muslim lawyer to represent a muslim in a sharia court since its about Islam.

  2. Perhaps syariah court does not have any jurisdiction on the non-muslims. In a case of a non-muslim lawyer defending a client in a syariah court, I would think the court would not have any power on the lawyer even he or she behaves in contempt of court.

  3. Does it appear logical for a non-Muslim to be a functionary in a Muslim religious Shariah court? If that is open, then what can stop a satanist doing the same, how about acting as an Imam?

  4. In Courts of christian inspiration that you find in some countries of Europe you don't find any jew nor muslim not even atheists so i am not really surprised. In the UK (where I live) in Catholic Institutions you are asked about your faith and very often not being catholic can be a reason to get refused the job (for example teacher in catholic school). its not always the case, but it happened to me in a place where I got offered a job as teacher in a catholic school until they finally knew I wasnt catholic and asked me to look for another place after having first accepted me; that was in april 2010.

  5. Because Malaysia is not a country of only muslims. The rest of us are not muslims, do not want to be muslims while the government is lopsidedly muslim and wants us to convert. Shariah is a muslim system, it would defeat the government's purpose if non-muslims tangled with muslims get better representation with a non-muslim lawyer, no? So the only way to get unprejudiced representation would be to ... oh, right, convert to Islam.

Please don't comment about malaysia not being prejudiced about this.

This is not a comment on Islam, more on how the government deal with this Islamic issue so that it's always to their advantage.
