The Burkini

Nigella Lawson's decision to wear the Burkini appears to have caused a storm amongst right wing fashion police whose preference for skin cancer and the sexualisation of women overrides the decency and modesty a Burkini provides for all women regardless of religion.

The vicious and nasty accusations of "betrayal" by Judith Woods in the Torygraph and others has I believe led to a significant backlash amongst non Muslim women who as Kausar Sacarine of Burkini company M Active correctly highlights are interested in simply looking elegant and safe on the beach.

Why a piece of women's clothing can cause the Sun to send one it's page 3 girls onto the beach with a Burkini is beyond me however, LM finds some of the comments by readers of the Daily Mail interesting who fed up with Nigella Lawson being hounded are urging the tabloids to leave her alone.

Whatever happened to a womans freedom of choice to wear what they want and why the silence from all those right wing hypocrites who selectively support Burka Bans but not a woman's right to wear a Burkini.

  1. The trouble with Islam is that you are basically a religion who deny women rights, amongst other things. Why do men not need to cover up to protect themselves from the sun? Why aren't men more modest?

As a male, Islam sounds good, we have all the power, and the women are silly enough to let us have it.

Muslim women do not have a so called "freedom of choice", they are brainwashed from birth to follow the way that Islam dictates, or suffer the sad consequences.

    1. Marc, the same on 'Anonymous8 May 2012 19:54' applies to you too, the beauty of Islamic rules for Muslim women cannot be fully appreciated by Muslim women if they do NOT wholeheartedly accept these rules, it may appear to YOU and other ignorants like your good self to think "women are silly enough to let MEN have all the power", I have chosen that path not because I am silly enough, I can see the benefits of my position, so what is not apparent to you and the rest of society is that these Muslim women are in-fact very powerful women in their own rights, Islam gives them that right and status, and their men help by elevating them, so before you think on ignorantly about Islamic women and their rights and status within their society, speak to them on a personal level and get educated in this field, cos my fellow human it's making you sound silly enough to the follow the masses and believe everything the media portrays, good day to you!

  2. You just said it. Safe. Why should women have to look safe, unless you are also saying all men are potential sexual and physical predators?

Maybe it's time society - especially muslim society - looked at the other side of the coin?

Seems to me there's something radically wrong with an ideology which can't trust its men to behave in a civilised manner around women, and has to impose a code of dress which de-humanises and de-feminises the female form in order for those men to quench their uncontrollable lusts.

Why are muslim men so terrified of women, by the way?

Women should be safe and equal in any society. They should have the freedom to wear whatever they wish, not be constrained by either threats, indoctrination, fear or intolerance, into wearing something as hideous and alienating as a burka, burkini - even a head-scarf.

Why should they have to hide their beauty to appease men?

For you to say because it makes them safe is a male problem not a female one. Maybe castration would be an answer?

    1. If you were offered two sweets, one wrapped and the other unwrapped but both fell on the ground near some dog pooh, which one would you choose to pop in your mouth, the sweet covered in a wrapper or the unwrapped sweet which may have had contact with dog pooh?

Well, it's the same principal with the Muslim women. Really, you would rather be with a woman every other Tom, Dick and Harry has ogled and had wet dreams about, I would feel tainted if any man looked at me with sexy eyes, thanks all the same but I prefer feeling safe in my full glory rather than exposing my jewels!

    2. Why would you care if someone has *thought* about you, as a woman? Thoughts aren't reality and have no impact on the real world unless acted upon. Men are biologically programmed to think about women. They don't stop thinking thought about women if they're covered up. It just leaves more to the imagination. I'm not advocating going around half naked, I just don't understand why someone would feel dirty at a physiobiological sense.

  4. @londonmuslim - So, you're advocating the burkini should also be mandatory for all muslim men, then? I'll believe *that* when I see it. And as you're so concerned about protecting women from the sun, would you care to comment on the significantly higher incidence of rickets in muslim women?

As for your "right wing fashion police" nonsense - westerners may (or may not) complain about women wearing a burkini, but they won't get violent about it. On the other hand, muslims won't simply complain about a woman wearing an actual bikini...they'll beat her over it, possibly to death.

  5. @Marc ... women have SO many rights in Islam! You do know more women than men convert to Islam right? & they all have no bad words to give on the religion. As for the 'freedom of choice', I'm a Muslim woman and I can choose what to do. I go to university, I live away from home during the week. I work. I wear the hijab, but also wear Western clothing that don't expose anything. You need to get over this stereotypical view you have.

  6. Research shows that more than 60% of converts to islam are women. They are well educated and intelligent. Most of them do intense research on islam before becoming muslims.

Can somebody tell me why these women enter islam if they think that islam subjugates them and doesn't treat them equally?

  7. people have to understand that YES women in islam are free but at the same time they are free according to islamic rules.

"The trouble with Islam is that you are basically a religion who deny women rights, amongst other things."

muslim men and women follow the quran and its laws. woman are free but at the same time those muslim women follow the quran and so it might seem to you that they are not free.

Remember nuns they also cover up from head to toe, the mother of jesus also covered up, some jewish woman shave their head and wear a wig following their own jewish shariah.

in some muslim countries like syria/iraq/egypt/lebanon you will find muslim woman not wearing hijab, the syrian president's wife doesnt wear hijab so is the queen of jordan.

  19. there is a false dichotomy being laid out:

it isn't either a retrograde repressive dress code or hyper-sexualization.

sex between consenting adults isn't evil. a woman's virginity isn't the source of her family's 'honor'. being brainwashed from birth to believe this doesn't change the fact that your brainwashed.

seeing others bodies (e.g. at the beach) isn't sexualization to most people once you've spent more than 10 minutes at the beach. in short, the west doesn't need hijab for a cure because the status of Western women isn't in decline.

  22. To the anonymous white buffoons above,

Sex between "consenting adults" is noting but the slogan of irresponsible losers and degenerates unwilling to marry, and raise a family. This explains why the majority of whites are born bastards, raised in dysfunctional house holds and will repeat the cycle. The concept of honor, respect and responsibility is foreign to whites because they are culturally and morally defective.
Whites hate chaste women because they want quick cheap sex like the animals that they are. White women have a reputation internationally as sluts so they shouldn't be upset that normal human beings look down on them. Instead they should close their legs and develop character.

  23. I kinda like the burkini because it gives a little more freedom for the modest woman who would not normally have fun on the beach, I have seen worse fashions and if they get the chance to relax by the beach then good for them.

I don't see the big deal in most of these comments, unlike the burkini wich is a good thing, they are utter trash and I am proud not to know people like them regardless of background and cultral differences!.

Don't ya know we all are animals nothing devine about that and not even a worthy insult please be more inventive. I know things you don't!!..

  24. I actually like the concept of modest swimwear. For years I have struggled with the idea of wearing swimwear on the beach and having my not-perfect body scrutinised by everyone. The result being, that I've avoided these situations for over a decade.
My mind has been opened by discovering there are alternatives - and whilst I wouldn't necessarily opt for the full "burkini", I have found some really pretty and stylish semi-cover swimwear on some of the Islamic modesty swimwear sites. I just wish that all the people who have been so negative towards each other on this site would embrace the fact that we all share one world, and can learn a lot from each other if we communicate with peace in our hearts and open minds :-)

  26. @A.D.Gustav III Jr.

You are half right, any woman can be a lut...however there is no denying the white woman is the most slutty female around. There may be a few women of color who engage in similar behavior, but that's thanks to the exposure to white western culture which breeds shallow, low self esteem and zero moral values.

    @anonymous above,

Prejudice? No, it's FACTS. Whites are not used to be being put in their place. I am NOT at all ashamed of my position on white people, simply because it is the truth. White supremacy(the root of western culture) in all forms is dispicable and must be opposed and eradicated by human beings everywhere.

Funny, why can't a woman cover herself while the others choose to showing it off - it's her choice, pay some respects

    ReplyDelete
  28. White supremacy is the "root of western culture"? Really? On what evidence are you basing this foolish assertion?

The last time I checked, it was countries like America and France that first embraced true equality. The American concept of the "melting pot" glorified the assimilation of people from every culture around the world into one unified people, where everyone has an opportunity to work hard and make their own future without help or obstruction from government. This is a far cry from the nonsense you regurgitate.

And given your penchant for denigrating western culture, seemingly in favor of far more depraved, intolerant, paternal, and misogynistic cultures, perhaps you should do a little research before spouting off such utter ignorance. For example, there is a reason why so few blacks are found in Arab society (especially in government):

    http://www.pashtunforums.com/world-news-16/arab-racism-against-black-africans-11072/

And the enslavement of Africans, which many self-proclaimed intellectuals of the day would have us believe began as a phenomenon of western greed and racism, actually started with Arab Muslims slave traders operating in Africa, and continues today at the hands of Arab Muslims militias like the Janjaweed today in places like Sudan:

    http://www.scaruffi.com/politics/slavetra.html
    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/africa/article2489206.ece
    http://www.enoughproject.org/blogs/slavery-darfur

Whites have been "put in their place" for a very long time. In case, you hadn't noticed, a vast majority of television commercials employ humor at the expense of white males.

And so long as I'm on the topic of tolerance, I should also remind you that Iran's Ahmadinejad spoke at Columbia University in 2007, answering a question about the existence of gays in Iran as follows:

"In Iran we don't have homosexuals like in your country. In Iran we do not have this phenomenon. I do not know who has told you we have it."

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-483746/We-dont-gays-Iran-Iranian-president-tells-Ivy-League-audience.html

Why would you think he would say this? Do you really think there are no gays whatsoever in Iran, or would you assume that he is simply hiding his embarrassment given the tenets of Islam? The truth is that Iran has a death penalty for homosexuals and this is why there are no homosexuals in his country.

So go on attacking the west. No matter how broken our moral compass may indeed be, you haven't a clue of how good you actually have it.

  29. I would just like to say, there are some muslims that are white! In the same way not all 'brown people' are muslim either.

  30. I get that people don't have an understanding for anyone religion just based on their own prejudice views. If you are so keen on being racist and prejudice and have a belief I wonder how the deity or other something is looking at you know? I'm pretty sure we all share the same message in religion that discrimination is wrong.
If a person chooses to wear a burkini its fine, it’s their decision, if they choose not to it is there opinion as well. But we must draw a line between what's right and wrong and being prejudice and ignorant about different religions in society. It is unacceptable by all decent human beings and religions. You are entitled to your opinions, but if it's based on ignorance, stereotype and lack of knowledge don't open your mouth. In other words if you don't have something nice to say don't say it at all.
If people really wanted to know about atheists, christians, muslims and all the other religions, they wouldn't use google. The internet will always have bias and incorrect messages so does the media. How do you not know that websites weren't written by anyone on this blog? For all we know it could be the out of control person against whites or the other person against muslims? If you only know about something from one point of view (i.e media, internet, people who mix up their religion or extremists behaviour), then you are indeed narrow minded and ignorant of the other point of view. All I'm saying is that if you want info on anyone religions go to the best source there scriptures and extremists are found in all beliefs so it's best to avoid them.

Now tell me this, would anyone of view be happy if an alien was to judge planet earth and all it saw through its telescope was a hobo on the street? Does that mean all earth’s population is like that? Similarly every religion got its bad apples and every culture, community and country does as well. So if we’re all looking at faults of other people why not look around ourselves first? Now that alien believes we are all hobos and is ignorant to the rest of the population. It is because of ignorance, lack of knowledge and stereotype that we judge others before judging ourselves. Are we perfect? No so chances are people in different religions aren't so perfect either. Do not judge based on what you’re told or what took you 3 seconds to google. If you don't want to be bias get both sides of the picture and makes sure you get the right views before judging.

  32. I agree with Anonymous 15 June 14:25.
Several sites on the internet about christianity, judaism and islam are extremely incorrect and have false content. Please go to the original scriptures and books by "authenticated" writers. (Sadly some 'scholars' have written without verification and a few were downright fabrications, so please beware).

To all of you who have made negative comments about Islam or the West, I urge you to please read the Holy book and see for yourselves. You will find that women are indeed given all their rights and that women in cultures around the world who are deprived of their rights is not 'because' of Islam but rather 'inspite' of it. And that is due to the ignorant, chauvinistic male dominancy prevailing in society. Both western and eastern. Various situations, differnt scenarios but both extremes are found and neither is right. Islam teaches a moderate path, a balance.

Modesty is preached by all prophets of God. All the way from Adam to Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Mohammed (peace be upon them all).
Men have their satar (parts of the body to remain covered) too, same as women.

I am a Muslim, a single woman,a doctor, a volunteer social worker and counselor.
I wear a head scarf and I wear both eastern and western dresses.
My freedom and empowerment were given to me as my natural right by my religion.

Not all Arabs are Muslims nor all Muslims Arabs.
Islam abolished slavery stating that no human being is the property of another as all are equal.

To Cracker Whacker: Excuse me, brother, but who are you to use such hateful language for anyone, whether their race religion or colour??? Ours is a faith of tolerance, guidance, equality, knowledge, peace and brotherhood.By using such language, by adopting such an attitude you are proving to those who are prejudiced or ignorant or afraid that we are indeed what they feared us to be. And hence no one will even try to know us for what we are.

Lastly, there are extremists; misinformed, ill judging creatures, on all sides and it is due to them and their intolerant views, actions and reactions that such dissent and discontent exists between races. Please, for the sake of yourself and yours, the children in the world and those yet to come, stop it....

From Adam to Mohammed (peace be on them all), we all worship the same deity, our commandments are the same, our faith is the same.
Pick up the books and read their translations you will see for yourself.

But whatever your religion, your country, your colour; don't slander or attack or judge another person before taking a good hard look at yourself first. At all of yourself.

  33. Maekani Khan I wish that there were more people like you in this world especially in our current society. I am also a Muslim but I have chosen not to wear the head scarf, many who meet me are ‘shocked’ when they find out that I am not Muslim. I often ask why it is so hard for them to believe that I am Muslim, the usual response I get is because I am so ‘normal’.

It is sad to think we live in a society so ignorant of another religion. Unfortunately Islam has been so badly represented by a few ‘bad apples’ and they have managed to tarnished the reputation of many others who follow it.

I consider myself to be a strong follower of Islam who chooses not to wear a Birkini but I certainly do not or ever will have an ill view on those who choose to wear such attire.

And one last thing to Cracker Whacker I am so saddened by your comments, it is a shame to have someone like you representing a religion that teaches peace and tolerance. Please DO NOT call yourself a true Muslim because you are a disgrace, it is people like you that make Islam seem like a religion of hate and violence.

  34. The slut walks are a scientific experiment testing the statement by an imam that immodestly dressed women are the cause of earthquakes. Needless to say we do not expect any earthquakes to result but are mocking the attitude that blames women for literally every evil in the world.

If Muslim men can't stand to see women dressed comfortably and able to see where they are going, then the men need to wear blinders, eye-shades, or perhaps even blindfolds. Why blame women for men's lustful lack of self-control? Put the burden of solving the problem on the offenders, not the victims.

    ReplyDelete
  35. @Monada,

There is nothing "scientific" about "slut walks," you ignorant pale ape. Your comment is based on the common fallacy white creatures base their retarded stereotyping off. Its not about control but common sense, if you dress like a whore, don't complain about harassment and getting undue attention. I dont see anyone arguing that "women are the source of every evil in the world," so quit making sh1t up.
Wear clothes like a civilized human being, nobody wants to see you smelly fat arse on the streets. This is the problem with conversing with whites, they don't even understand the basics of civilized society, holding onto their dysfunctional caveman roots.

  36. Burkini is so adorable!! Why so much hate? What's the big deal? To each their own. I love being a Muslim woman. I find it sad that individuals are getting angry, because someone decided to wear a specific thing. Oh, this world and the people in it. At least I love me so no need for someone else to do so.

  38. What a brilliant idea, and a refreshing read! There is a great deal of misunderstanding in western culture about the treatment of women under Islam (something which the mainstream media does very little rectify, sadly) and it's wonderful to see this lady's work taking off so swimmingly (pun intended!). I don't understand why people feel the need to throw such hatred around regarding other cultures. Just because someone doesn't think like you doesn't mean their lifestyle and beliefs are to be ridiculed. Repression happens in all cultures (just look at the fame junkie culture in Britain today for evidence of this before pointing the finger), but to assume EVERYONE with a different opinion has been brainwashed is just narrow minded. I think the burkini is a wonderful idea that gives Muslim women the freedom to enjoy their pursuits without compromising their modesty. Speaking as a white British atheist, I would wear one as I suffered a skin condition a few years ago and for a long time did not feel comfortable in a swimsuit. Something like this would have solved the problem. Spare the judgement - it's an item of clothing, not a political statement.

  39. The "Slut Walk" is a response to a comment by a police officer in Canada that implied women bring on sexual violence by the clothing they wear.
The women are professing the idea that people who commit violent acts are solely responsible for them. Patriarchal ideas persist in society all around the world.
The women are trying to make people aware of how the mind is clouded by these ideas.
The name "Slut Walk" is cynical.
All you have to do is read the news to learn this.
