Ras Adiba Mohd Radzi Malaysian TV Anchor Suspended Over a Haircut

Ras Adiba Mohd Radzi a popular Muslim TV Anchor has been suspended from her job for simply getting a haircut in solidarity with a Cancer Awareness Campaign.

While NTV7 deny the claim they have suspended her but admit they are "discussing" the situation with her there seems to be a nasty undercurrent about how women are expected to look particularly a female news anchor which leaves a nasty taste in the mouth. An alternative way of looking at this story is how the crass stupidity of the Channel has inadvertently provided the Cancer Campaign with the oxygen of publicity it so desperately requires.

LM suggests NTV7 show some humility and intelligence by reinstating Ras to her job while also doing what they say in their statement helping Ras continue to highlight the plight of those suffering from such a crippling illness.

  1. Come on, LM. You're expressing surprise and disgust at this but they are simply following the example of the Prophet, as all good Muslims are supposed to do!
Muhammad cursed effeminate men and masculine women in this hadith edited by Bukhari:
Narrated Ibn Abbas: The Prophet cursed effeminate men and those women who assume the similitude (manners) of men. He also said said: "Turn them out of your houses." He turned such and such a person out, and Umar [a principal companion of Muhammad] also turned out such and such person. (Bukhari vol. 8, no. 6834; see vol. 7 nos. 5885 and 5886)
Thus, effeminate men and masculine women were cursed and driven out of the early Muslim community.
Heaven forbid that any independent-minded woman should get a "masculine" crew-cut, then.

  2. Agreed with you, Spinoza. Shouldn't Muslim women cover her aurah? Expressing support for any awareness campaign can still be done if we cover our aurah as Muslimah.
