Food Nutrition Advice During Ramadan

Further to my previous article about using Science to sight the new Moon its only a few days inshallah until Ramadan starts so the need for healthy Nutrition is vital. Take a look at the different range of food Muslims from around the world will eat during Ramadan.

Ramadan in London during Summer is going to be a challenge so it goes without saying the importance of maintaining good nutrition especially with some initial fasts lasting up to 18 Hours. The following two articles here and here both written by non Muslim experts in the field of Nutrition certainly gave LM food for thought and in my opinion need to be carefully understood and followed.

While understandably the focus during the blessed month of Ramadan is religious one cannot also underestimate the importance of our health particularly if for exempt you are diabetic and need to maintain your blood sugar levels. For those Diabetics who do not need to Fast as you are exempted on health grounds but will nevertheless go ahead for the sake of pleasing Allah SWT then please do read and follow the excellent advice by Diabetics UK.

With regard to Nutrition, LM found the above articles invaluable particularly the need to eat carbohydrates because they are digested slowly and remain in the body for longer so lots of brown granary bread and oat breakfasts. In addition, maintaining hydration is also vital so about 3 litres of Water but do try and avoid the Tea & Coffee due to the Caffeine.

  1. Here are some links I found to share on fasting. The Jewish fasts come in two flavors: 25 hours and day-light. No matter the length of your fast, I wish it be easy on the body and spiritually fulfilling!

Assuring adequate fluids in the pre-Yom Kippur meal (for people with diabetes) This article also suggests how best to break the fast. Its advice is similar to the one you link to, but more detailed.

  2. Assalamu alaikum.
I just want to say that Vitamin B12 complex in liquid form helps so much with gaining energy. It takes about 1-2 weeks to feel the great affects.
